Roots of Resilience
Affordable Housing + Cultural Center - Beaufort, SC
In collaboration with Kylee Russell
The Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved Africans, have deep cultural ties to the land and water of the South Carolina Lowcountry, relying on sustainable farming and fishing practices passed down through generations. However, many families face challenges with heirs’ property, which threatens their land and heritage. Our project on St. Helena Island provides affordable housing in traditional shotgun-style homes, fostering a sense of permanency and community. A key feature is the Culture Center, which includes spaces for youth recreation, cultural learning, and legal resources to help families protect their land through the Heir’ Property School. By creating a space that celebrates and sustains Gullah Geechee culture, we ensure that future generations can thrive in harmony with their environment.
