Hangin’ Around
Bamboo Pavilion - Clemson, SC
Collaborators: Garrett Collins, Salvatore Costanzo, Jordan O’Connor
FINAL DESIGN:
This design studio began with a small project to design and build a full scale bamboo pavilion. Ultimately, our group decided to create a ruled surface. This design was comprised of two posts containing 3 pieces of bamboo at 16’ long tied together, with 26 pieces of bamboo at 30’ long that are evenly distributed into notches in the posts.
Initial designs involved using posts to lift the corners of the ruled surface, but for a sleeker design, we moved to using a pulley that was hung over a branch of a tree on the site. The bamboo pieces were mainly secured together through the use of zip ties. There were also some dowels and twine used in the posts to try and prevent sliding.
EARLY CONCEPTS:
To create this design, it was vital to choose each piece of bamboo that would be used in order to have consistency. This meant going into a valley and cutting down the bamboo, then moving it to a truck to transport to the site. Once at the site, we had to carry the bamboo from the truck down the hill to our specific build location.
We started the building process by building the surface flat on the ground and securing all of the pieces. From there we attached the pulley system and threw the cable over the tree branch. Finally we hoisted the corners of the posts up and tied everything down to be secure.
